This trip combined city food stops in Auckland, a big adventure block in Queenstown, scenic day drives around Fiordland / Wanaka / Glenorchy, then a slower finish through Lake Tekapo, Christchurch, and Blenheim (Marlborough wine region).

Route at a glance

  • Jan 10-15 (Auckland): city walking tour, cafes, and full-day Hobbiton + Waitomo excursion.
  • Jan 15-20 (Queenstown): adventure-heavy days (Milford Sound drive, Nevis bungy/swing, skydive, Skyline Gondola).
  • Jan 17 (Wanaka day trip): lake viewpoints, lavender farm, and lunch brewery stop.
  • Jan 19 (Glenorchy day trip): scenic drive, lunch, and standout ice cream stop.
  • Jan 20-22 (Lake Tekapo): scenic transfer, stargazing/southern lights luck, and relaxed town days.
  • Jan 22-24 (Christchurch/Blenheim): Christchurch food stop, then Marlborough wine day in Blenheim.
  • Jan 25 (Auckland): unplanned extra night due NYC snowstorm flight cancellation.

Highlights

  • Hobbiton + Waitomo Caves day tour was one of the best full-day excursions.
  • Queenstown adventure stack was the core of the trip: Nevis bungy/swing + NZONE skydive + Skyline Gondola.
  • Milford Sound self-drive day stood out for scenery and kea sightings.
  • Wanaka + Lake Hawea day was a strong side trip with easy pacing and great viewpoints.
  • Marlborough winery day in Blenheim was excellent, especially the Wairau River lunch/tasting block.

City notes

Auckland

Great intro city for coffee and casual food before South Island adventure days. The city walking tour (~2 hours) was enough for orientation and routing.

Queenstown

Best base for high-adrenaline activities plus day drives. Book popular dinner spots and excursions in advance because evenings and top operators fill quickly.

Milford Sound / Fiordland

The long drive was worth it for scenery alone; weather shifted during the route, but views were still strong with many pull-off options.

Wanaka + Glenorchy day trips

Both were high-value day trips from Queenstown. Wanaka gave easy lakeside/photo stops; Glenorchy added classic LOTR-style landscapes.

Lake Tekapo

Good reset stop after Queenstown. Night sky conditions can change quickly, so flexibility helped with southern lights viewing.

Christchurch + Blenheim

Christchurch worked mainly as a transfer node. Blenheim was a strong finish for wineries and relaxed food stops.
